from Hávamál (stanza 138), a single poem in the Codex Regius, a collection of Old Norse poems from the Viking age, Odin describes sacrificing himself to himself:
"I know that I hung on a windy tree
nine long nights,
wounded with a spear, dedicated to Odin,
myself to myself,
on that tree of which no man knows
from where its roots run."
The Old Norse name Hávamál is composed of Hávi, a form of Hár ('High One')... and the plural noun mál (from older mǫ́l), and means 'Song (or Words) of the High One'.
And from the following stanza:
"I took up the runes,
screaming I took them,
then I fell back from there."
Regarding the vegvísir (Icelandic for 'sign post, wayfinder'), from the Huld Manuscript which was collected by Geir Vigfusson in 1860:
"... if this sign is carried, one will never lose one's way in storms or bad weather, even when the way is not known".
The Icelandic (Old Norse) Vegvísir is composed of vegur (Old Norse vegr < Proto-Germanic *wegaz, or the Proto-Indo-European *weǵʰ-.), meaning 'way, road, path' + vísir (Old Norse vísa meaning 'to show, point out, indicate', or the Proto-Germanic wīsōną or wisaz, meaning 'to visit'), meaning 'pointer, guide'. Vísir derives its meaning from the same word as the English wise.
Although oft confused to be Viking, there is no evidence of vegvísir being such; and the Huld Manuscript was collected 8 centuries after the end of the Viking Age. There is no known earlier attestation.
